There are few things I love more than a fresh soft pretzel. As a teen, I loved getting pretzels at the mall with mustard to dip. It has that special, enriched dough, that normal bread doesn't have, not to mention being bathed in oil and sprinkled with chunky coarse salt. It definitely has the gold medal in my heart for #1 comfort food. Luckily, by the time I yearned for soft pretzels as a vegan, someone had already developed a vegan recipe that's a perfect dupe.

Once I had baked the perfect pretzel, I had to share them with everyone I knew (and liked). Because it's not everyday someone bakes you a fresh soft pretzel, let alone a vegan one. I also made the perfect mustard dip. My "perfect dip" recipe is just yellow mustard, sriracha and agave. Simple, but it surely does the trick.

After some practice, I got better at my twist, the exact bake time -- to the second, and my knead-technique.

I experimented with whole wheat flour, some gluten-free flour, spelt flour, and a few other kinds, but it's not a surprise that nothing beats the traditional mall-style original.

It's best when you can get them just slightly underdone, but beautifully golden on the bottom.

Good pretzel chat. <3

  1. Those look thoroughly heavenly! I really do like pretzels of all kinds, but I'm a bit shy of making because they always seemed a bit hard work to make. I'm really glad to find out they're definitely doable!

    1. Pretzels are so special. I've recently discovered pretzel rolls! That's perfect for when you don't want to go through the kneading, rising, rolling, boiling and baking (and cleaning)!!
